SUVA's Albuquerque campus hosted the 2012 WordCamp conference this past weekend.
Southwest University of Visual Arts Albuquerque campus was the site of the 2012 WordCamp conference this past weekend. SUVA played host to 200 WordCampers ranging from kids and novices to professionals, who are wild about the WordPress program from doing websites and blogs.
This event was open to everyone who had an interest in learning about the cool things you can do with the “open source”, WordPress program. Elementary school kids came to learn how they could use WordCamp to organize their homework, do projects for school and start blogs about their favorite classes. Novices, new to WordPress, were treated to various sessions that explained all the great innovations in blog & website development.
Even seasoned professionals got into the act, with some leading the workshops and seminars while others were in attendance in hopes of learning new ways of streamlining their WordPress workflow.
There was even a WordPress “Hack-a-thon,” where three struggling local businesses were able to have a website created by teams of volunteers using the WordPress program. There was a special unveiling at the end of WordCamp and the three recipients of the websites were not only pleased, but also blown away at what their team had put together for them in only a weekend.
SUVA graduates and current students were in attendance to participate and volunteer. Without their help this WordCamp wouldn’t have gone off as smoothly as it did. The WordCamp organizers were thrilled by how professional and helpful our SUVA volunteers were. Thanks to everyone who made this weekend at WordCamp such a success!
Meet a small community of like-minded, forward-thinking artists and designers!

Mesa del Sol will play host to the New Mexico Game Jam competition in Albuquerque this summer.
Every year this event gets bigger and better. This year there will be several Game Jam sites in New Mexico, one in Albuquerque at the Mesa del Sol, two in Las Cruces and even one in Durango, Colorado with a grand total of 90 or so participants expected to compete in this 48 hour game development competition.
This event is open to anyone and everyone who wants to get in on developing a playable game. Professionals, students, novices and hobbyists get together to hash out ideas based on the secret theme that is unveiled on the first day. Typically the theme is made up of three words that are chosen at random, a noun, a verb and an adjective. All words are chosen by Carolyn Handler Miller, author of Digital Storytelling, Second Edition: A creator's guide to interactive entertainment.
Our artistic students get to meet and work with professional programmers and programming students from other area schools to develop the look and feel of the games. Even Freshmen students are able to rise to the challenge and are selected to be on teams to help design and execute the characters and backgrounds needed for the look and feel of the game their teams were making. Digital, as well as board games are made during a Game Jam, so don’t be intimidated by having to know programming. What we need are artists to participate. Programmers make it run, artists provide the look and feel.
No previous experience is needed and anyone can participate. New Mexico Game Jam starts Friday, August 24th at 5pm at Mesa de Sol and goes until 5pm on Sunday, August 26th. Bring sleeping bags and snacks if you plan to go the entire 48 hours without a break.

SUVA participates at 2012 ABQ Comic Expo!
Southwest University of Visual Arts' Albuquerque campus hosted a booth at the 2012 ABQ
Comic Expo held in downtown Albuquerque at the Convention Center this past weekend.
Opening day saw record breaking crowds and the students volunteering at the SUVA booth did
a fabulous job talking about SUVA, the various degree programs and our Summer Teen Camp
coming up at the end of the month.
Saturday, special guests like Stan Lee, Jay & Silent Bob and Kevin Sorbo were on hand to
participate in Q&As, sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Special surprise guest, Terry
Naughton, friend of our very own Phil Young, who worked at Disney together on such classics
as The Great Mouse Detective and Aladdin, was also in town for our big ABQ Comic Expo. A
special impromptu Disney reunion was held and Phil and Terry got to catch up on old times.
Those of us lucky enough to be present, were regaled with stories from those classic days at
Disney.
Sunday was the final day and the fun never stopped. Some of the best costumes of the whole
Expo were there. Lots of photos were taken and our SUVA booth just kept drawing in the
crowds of interested folks wanting to learn more about our programs.
Thanks to all of the students who volunteered to work the SUVA booth and a special thanks to
everyone who stopped by to say “Hi’.

SOUTHWEST UNIVERSITY OF VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS WIN DISTRICT COMPETITION
AAF DISTRICT 12 NSAC, EL PASO—April 14, 2012—Southwest University of Visual Arts (SUVA) Albuquerque and Tucson campuses swept this year’s District 12 American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition, placing first and third, respectively.
Six colleges competed for the opportunity to attend the American Advertising Federation national competition June 2-5 in Austin, Texas. This is the eighth time Southwest University of Visual Arts, formerly known as The Art Center Design College, has won the district competition in ten years, advancing to nationals beating University of Arizona, University of Texas – El Paso, Brigham Young University – Utah, and University of Northern Colorado.
District 12 judges also presented individual awards. Judges’ awards were presented to two SUVA students – Shalen Holt of Albuquerque for best male presenter, and Tucson’s Keisha Cornelius for best female presenter.
The National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) is the premier college advertising competition. The Education Services division of the American Advertising Federation annually conducts the NSAC in cooperation with a major corporation. This year, Nissan challenged advertising students from across the country to present a top-notch, comprehensive advertising campaign based on criteria identified in a complex case study.
Student teams researched the products, goals and objectives presented in the case study to create a completely integrated $100 million communications campaign targeting multicultural millennials 18-29 years of age. For months, students worked to develop a marketing and advertising plan that included creating online advertising, collateral material, promotions, new and traditional media selections, print, television and radio ads as well as appropriately allocating the budget.
“The NSAC competition provides students with valuable real-world advertising experience. The exposure to developing a targeted advertising campaign truly gives students an advantage when they enter the job market. Students also benefit from competing with their peers on the regional district level and learn from each other about different approaches to solve the same problem. The New Mexico advertising community is proud and thrilled that SUVA's students won the competition and will represent District 12 at the AAF national competition. We wish them great success, but the real success is in the problem-solving, analytical and creative skills they have learned through participating in this competition.” – Meresa Thompson, Past President American Advertising Federation - New Mexico (2010-2011); Senior Manager of Marketing & Creative, Heritage Hotels & Resorts.
“NSAC provides a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of the challenging and exciting career field ahead of us. Coming from a smaller school and going into this competition was also unique. I felt such a bond with my fellow students that I did not see from those bigger schools. I’m walking away from winning district a more confident person. Now on to Nationals!” – Shalen Holt, Graphic Design major at SUVA’s Albuquerque campus.
The Albuquerque team members include presenters: Shalen Holt, Jennifer Roybal, Ricardo Chavez, Kelly Stephens and Alicia Padilla. Even a couple of Freshmen students rose to the challenge and were selected to be on teams to help design and execute the characters and backgrounds needed for the look and feel of the game their teams were making.
Our campus saw over 40 participants take on the challenge of producing a playable digital or board game in 2 straight days of non-stop game development action. At the end, our site produced 11 digital games and 1 board game.

In her series titled, "The Beautifully Grotesque", Rosie Johnson presents a series of fashion portraits that draw upon a mixture of references to the beautiful, the deathly, and surreal. Through violent and morbid images, Johnson brings notes of brutality to the fashion magazines by portraying models as fragile mortals rather than invincible super humans.
Rex Koningsor has assembled a collection of photographs and artifacts, titled "Along the 31st Parallel", that deals with migrant traffic across the U. S. – Mexican Border. His work is the culmination of months of travelling along and across the International Border. This piece provokes an open discussion of both enforcement policies and humanitarian efforts in dealing with undocumented migrants.
Adrienne Kruger's BFA work "Leviathan" explores themes such as isolation and fear in a series of large charcoal drawings based on and inspired by Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick.
The Florence Quater Gallery at Southwest University of Visual Arts presents exhibitions, lectures, artist talks, workshops, and special projects by local, national, and international artists in the field of art and design, with an emphasis on contemporary modes of practice, individual vision, experimentation, and cultural and intellectual diversity. The Florence Quater Gallery serves Southwest University of Visual Arts, and the surrounding community, as an important resource in the enrichment of art and design education and lifelong learning.
